Notebook OS X Accessing Internet via Nokia E51

Here are the steps to setup a Macbook (OS 10.4.11) to work with the Nokia E51 for mobile internet access.

Note: I assume you already have the Nokia set up for data and you have a data plan (I strongly recommend the unlimited plan, or at at least a free 50GB data plan, or else you will really rack up a huge bill).

On the Apple Mac's end, you need to do the following:

  1. Drop the Nokia HSDPA scripts "Nokia 3G CID1" and 2 3 into the Modem Scripts folder inside your Library folder.  Open Finder and select Go > Go to Folder. Type in "/Library/Modem Scripts"
  2. Pair your 3G Nokia phone with your Mac laptop. To do this, go to System Preferences -> Bluetooth -> Choose Set up New Device. The Mac will give you a passkey to pair the phone.
  3. Make sure you select "Access the Internet with your phone's data connection" and the high speed option.
  4. Leave Username and GPRS CID String blank. Password put "user123" (without the quotes).
  5. After the Bluetooth set-up is done, go to System Preferences -> Network.
  6. And select to configure Bluetooth.
    For Telephone Number, use "sunsurf".
    For Account Name, use "65"
    Password should be "user123".
Under Bluetooth Modem, select any of the three3G scripts (I use "Nokia 3G CID1" without any problems).
Then click Connect, it should take about 15 to 30 seconds for the script to work, and if successful the following screen will appear.

The Nokia E51 gets a bit heated up when it is use for couple of hours and do expect the usage time on battery to drop to about 2 hours.  Here is some ways on how to extend the battery usage time.

On a happy note, while the modem is working away the phone is fully operational.  We are still able to received and make calls.  And even able to synchronise the address book using the same Bluetooth connection.

Hey everybody. The method also works fine with my MacBook 10.6.7 snow leopard.
