How to Setup a 3G Wireless Broadband Router

Main setup is the Mobile Connection. If correctly setup, it enables you to Connect and Disconnect from the 3G / UMTS or GPRS network through the User Interface. This will also indicate what your connection status is - Connected, Connecting or Disconnected.

Service Bearer Definitions:

  • 3G / UMTS: High-speed mobile network providing download speeds of up to 384kbps.
  • GPRS: Data network providing download speeds of up to 64kbps.

The default setting for the router is to connect to a 3G / UMTS signal when available, and then use a GPRS connection when this is not available. When the 3G / UMTS reception is not very strong the router can sometimes switch between bearers and this can sometimes cause the connection to be dropped. If your 3G / UMTS signal strength is fair and you are having problems maintaining a connection you can specify the router only to connect to the 3G / UMTS network or only the GPRS network.

APN Configuration

  • APN Name: Your mobile operator may have provided an alternative APN to connect to, if so, define it here.
  • User Name: The user name associated with the previously entered APN.
  • Password: The password corresponding to the previously entered user name.
  • DNS Supplied by Network: Check this box if the network operator automatically supplies the addresses of DNS servers when you connect.
  • PIN Code: If required, please enter your SIM card’s PIN code. The code will be stored here for future reference by the router and you will not have re-enter this unless you change SIM cards.

Here is a typical APN Configuration provided by our Mobile Service Provider.

The rest of the setting which you would normally leave them as default (settings that comes with the Router).

Automatic Configuration - DHCP : This setting is most commonly used by Cable operators.

Host Name : Enter the host name provided by your ISP.

Domain Name : Enter the domain name provided by your ISP.

Local IP Address : This is the address of the router.

Subnet Mask : This is the subnet mask of the router.

DHCP Server Settings : This determines how the clients are to use DNS / WINS.

Local Area Network Setup

Router Local IP Address : 192.168.1.1
Subnet Mask : 255.255.255.0

Local Network DHCP Server Settings
DHCP Server : Enable
Starting IP Address : 192.168.1.100
Maximum Number of DHCP Users : 50

DHCP Server allows the router to manage your IP addresses with starting IP Address is the address you would like to start with. The maximum number of DHCP Users allow you to limit the number of addresses your router hands out - maximum number logical user is 254.

Once you have the 3G Wireless Router properly setup, you should be able see the following status showing the mobile network traffic.
