Spam Protection

According to a recently released study by a network management, 80% of spam comes from computers contaminated with Trojan horse infections. These "spam Trojans" are clogging ISP mail servers. A spokesman for AOL estimates that the percentage of infected spam is closer to 85%.

While the time spent clearing your inbox of spam may only be a few minutes every day, the cost of spam in terms of productivity lost can amount to a lot of money, up to $50 million a year!  So instead of poring through your inbox hunting for spam every morning, let a spam filter do the work for you.

Spam filters use various techniques to sort through your e-mail and keep spam from clogging your inbox.

Especially if you are running "Outlook Express" as there is not in-built function to handle spam.  This is a time for you to install a spam removal tool.

Download 600K (SpamPal version 1.57) Or from the Author's website.

After installing the software (follow the wizard), you should see icon in your system tray.

You only need to change the following changes.

Start Outlook Express, Select Tools > Accounts... Choose you mail account and click Properties button.  Go to Server Tab and make the following changes.  Note: Replace "mail.example.com" & "my_login_id" with that of your current settings.

Old Settings New Settings
POP Server: mail.example.com  127.0.0.1
Username: my_login_id my_login_id@mail.example.com

How does a Spam Filter work?

The filter sits between your email program and your mailbox, checking your email as you retrieve it. Any email messages that the filter considers to be spam will be "tagged" with a special header; you simply configure your email client to filter anything with this header into a separate folder and your spam won't be mixed up with the rest of your email anymore!
