AVG - So how good is it ?
Here are some war stories from the trenches:
- It appears that an up-to-date Norton program missed 87 infected files. It anyone would like to question this, I would be glad to send them the report, as well as information on the software that missed it. I freely administer and recommend the use of AVG 6 for single systems
- I have had major problems with Norton under XP. On the three machines above it kept disabling itself, with AutoProtect not starting. Their response was that this can happen if you don't completely uninstall a previous version. Fine, now explain why it's happening on a brand-new bare-metal XP setup that never had Norton installed. I finally tossed it and went to AVG Professional based on my experience with the free version, and have had no occasion to look back.
- We started running AVG on all our workstations and our servers after the Nimda outbreak a couple of years ago. Norton and McAfee were installed on these systems, fully updated, and missed the virus somewhere along the way. After 12 hours of rebuilding servers, we looked for another solution, and a way to clean the infected machines. AVG did the trick, and since then we've never had a problem.
- I have been using AVG 6 for several years, and the only time I noticed someone else's machine with a virus that slipped by, it was because they didn't activate heuristic scan.
- All of the equipment (servers and workstations) at our office are protected by AVG, and in a nutshell, it just works - plain and simple. Some of the older machines still have the free version, but most have now been upgraded to AVG7.
- And at a starting price of $33.30 for TWO years of updates, they are indeed one of the most reasonably priced products out there.
- AVG is the best free virus scan software that I know of. You receive automatic updates, you can set it to scan your system at a convenient time for you.
