With so many viruses hidding in the ZIP format flying around, PDF format is probably the best way to move documents around at this moment.  So far, only one incident of virus (Peachy Virus) that can travel in PDF but that only affects a particular developer's version of PDF Acrobat and it does not affect any of the PDF Readers that is installed in almost every computer.

We have glue together a couple of software into a simple easy to install package.  Following the 5 steps, and you will be able to create your PDF from any document on your computer for free. 

Step 1)

Download (download now) the file. (6MB)

Step 2)

Unzip the downloaded file into c:\  root folder on your computer.  If correctly unzipped, it should have the following folder structure:

C:\GS
C:\GS\DUMP.OUT
C:\GS\FONTS
C:\GS\GS8.00
C:\GS\REDMON

Step 3)

Goto C:\GS\REDMON and run the setup.exe.  When prompted "Do you want to install the RedMon redirection port monitor?",  anwser Yes.

Step 4)

Install "Apple LaserWriter II NT v47.0" printer driver.  Go to Printer Folder and select Add a printer and follow the wizard.

Step 5)

• Right click on the installed printer and select Properties. 
• Select Port Tab and Click Add Port.
• Choose "Redirected Port" and click New Port button
• Enter port name RPT1: and click OK.
• Check that RPT1 Port is checked and click Configure Port button and copy and paste the following 2 lines into the first 2 boxes:
• C:\gs\gs8.00\bin\gswin32c.exe
• @c:\gs\djet500.rsp -sOutputFile="C:\gs\dump.out\%d.pdf" -dCompatibilityLevel#1.2 -dPDFSETTINGS=/ebook -dSAFER -dNOPAUSE -dBATCH -sDEVICE#pdfwrite -
• Output: Program handles output
• Run: Minimized

That's all the setting that is needed and you are reading to create PDF files.

To test, open any document and printer to "Apple LaserWriter II NT v47.0".  And the PDF file is generated into C:\GS\DUMP.OUT folder.
