AVG TCP Server Implementation
Using this function you can easily install AVG on all client workstations in the local network. This remote installation is secured by the AVG S-Tool a program creating an installation script, part of AVG Admin Software, that makes it possible to run the Setup installation program on all remote network workstations. All AVG clients in the network can be updated centrally using the AVGINET Lite program. This program runs the updates scheduled within the AVG Scheduler component.

AVG - workstation installation procedure
Step1: Select an first (test) workstation and install AVG from the installation CD: AVG Installation > AVG Professional > Full version. After the AVG software has been installed, set up the desired AVG configuration in the advanced interface then select the scheduled tasks, and define the desired test and update plans. Note: This configuration will be used as a template for AVG installation on all other network workstations.
Step 2: Install AVG S-Tool program - on the same client workstation install AVG S-Tool from the installation CD: AVG Installation > your AVG product > AVG Remote Administration / Installation. Note: To install AVG to all client workstations in your network run avgstool.exe from the AVGADMIN program directory.
On AVG S-Tool (avgstool.exe) dialog:
-
select the basic installation mode; the advanced installation mode option is recommended to experienced administrators.
-
select one of the options of creating and use of the installation script, the "NETWORK" option in this case confirm your selection to continue to the next AVG S-Tool dialog - Settings tab - and edit the following parameters:
-
License info: type in your license number
-
Remote control: unselect this option, you are not using the remote administration in this case
-
Batch properties: select whether you want to restart the client workstation after AVG installation
-
The AVG Agent and AVG installation files folder: specify the path to this directory
-
go to the Network tab and select the network type definition: the Domain option is recommended (the IP option is restricted to experienced network administrators)
-
press the Scan network button to browse the network; a list of stations accompanied by their current configuration information will be provided the Force install option: to reinstall AVG on all workstations regardless of their previous installation and configuration - select this.
-
press the Install AVG button to start the process of installing AVG to network workstations when prompted by the OS, enter the administrator access rights for target computer.
Note: Should the AVG remote installation on a single client station fail, the likely reason is that the target station runs the Windows 95 / 98 / Me / XP Home OS. AVG do not support remote the standard installation. For these operating systmes there is an alternative solution of AVG installation to to use avgagent.exe program (avgagent.exe is found in the AVGADMIN program folder).
Here is the manual installation procedure:
-
copy avgagent.exe, avgagent.lng and avgagent.ini files to a folder on the station.
-
run command avgagent.exe /install /start.
-
After that you can use all advantages of AVGAgent as remote installation of AVG or upgrade of AVGAgent.
Setup AVG Server:
Step 1: Download the update files to local web server (AVG TCP Server). Then define the server as the update source for particular AVG 7.x client stations in DataCenter.
Download the update files to local web server (AVG TCP Server) and define the state of update files is regularly checked by AVGINET Lite application. When new update files are detected, the AVGINET Lite downloads them to your local web server (AVG TCP Server) immediately. AVGINET Lite program parameters can be set as follows:
From the Start / Programs menu launch the AVG Admin 7.x / AVG TCP Monitor in the dialog window select the Configuration button on the General tab, tick the Enable HTTP support and fill in your local web serverīs (AVG TCP Serverīs) root address into the Local HTTP server field; this is where the update files will be stored go on to the InetLite tab where the Update URL and Proxy fields have been activated when the General tabīs field Local HTTP field was filled in: the Update URL is set to the Grisoft server update source by default fill in the Proxy field if you use a proxy server on the Scheduler tab you can set up the frequency of the update check and download via the AVGInet Lite application
Central update of the clients You will configure the local web server (AVG TCP Server) central updates for all the clients in DataCenter:
Launch the AVGADMIN application select a station from the list and double-click to configure the stationīs parameters in the Internet parameters group fill in the server name and its complete URL
Repeat these steps for all the client stations in your network.
Also if you have any problem with remote AVG installation?
The problem could be caused by insufficient access rights on target PC. For the remote installation it is required that target PC's local administrator's account is used to install AVG remotely, in domain networks it is recommended to use domain administrator account.
If the operating system of target PC is Windows XP, check following (and modify if it does not correspond):
Start->Settings->Control Panel-> Administrative tools->Local Security Policy-> Security settings -> Local Policies -> Security Options -> Network Access: sharing and security model Policy-> for local accounts
default value : local users authenticate as guests
new value : local users authenticate as themselves
To prove this, open Start-Run item on source computer and enter path
\\<target_machine_name>\C$. Example : \\tester\c$ .
Then press enter. Open Winnt folder and try to save any file in there. If this is not possible, you do not have access to the C drive on target machine.
Ports used by remote installation
If you use a firewalls in your network, you need to allow communication on following ports to install remotely:
-
Ping (ICMP type 0 - Incomming echo request) - required to find a remote station in the network.
-
Microsoft Files and Printers Sharing (TCP ports 139, 445 and UDP ports 137,138) - required to copy AvgAgent tool on the remote computer using Admin$ sharing.
-
RPC: Remote Procedure Call (TCP and UDP port 135) - required to launch AvgAgent service on the target PC.
-
Communication on TCP port number 6150 for AVG S-Tool and AvgAgent common communication. Using this port AVG S-Tool controls the AvgAgent tool and passes him installation files of AVG.
