WiMAX

wimax implementationsWiMAX is a new generation of new broadband wireless access based on IEEE802.16-2004 standard. WiMax is currently the leading fixed WBA (20MHz Wireless Broadband Access spectrum) and it can technically support speeds of up to 75Mbps in 20MHz channels over a range of less than 6.4km or in a typical cell radius deployment of three to 10 kilometers, WiMAX Forum Certified systems can be expected to deliver capacity of up to 40 Mbps per channel. Although the maximum projected range at lower speed is expected to be 50km.  WiMAX technology theoretically supports a coverage radius of 30 miles and a data rate of up to 75 Mbps, while WiFi currently supports a much shorter radius and lower data rates.  Unlike Wi-Fi, WiMax does not require line-of-sight to operate.  Currently, there are two WiMAX standards a fully rectified IEEE 802.16-2004 fixed WiMAX standard and a yet-to-be rectified IEEE 802.16e standard.  WiMAX  is sometimes referred to as to as "Wi-Fi on steroids".

WiMAX, a data-on-the-go alternative to cable and DSL, is a standards-based broadband wireless access technology for enabling the last-mile delivery of information. WiMAX will provide fixed, nomadic, portable and, eventually, mobile wireless broadband connectivity without the need for direct line-of-sight connection between a base station and a subscriber station.

It is expected that WIMAX technology will be incorporated in notebook computers and PDAs starting as early as the end of 2006, enabling urban areas and cities to become MetroZones for portable outdoor broadband wireless access. WiMAX technology has the potential to enable service carriers to converge the all-IP-based network for triple-play services such as data, voice, and video.

WiMAX network build-out costs will be much lower than 3G-based networks. This cost advantage will provide the operators an opportunity to offer more cost-competitive voice + data service packages to their WiMAX-subscribed customers.  WiMAX to appear and rock the 3G's and HSDPA's market position.  For the WiMAX outdoor unit, it is expect the BOM cost to be less than US$200 and the indoor unit, the BOM cost will initially be less than US$150. Eventually the cost will go down substantially as the volume goes up to enable mass deployment.   OEM Prices for WiMAX Chips will cost around US$45 each.  We will have to wait till end of 2006 to see real WiMAX products and services appearing the market.

Connecting the right way: Wi-Fi is more adapted for short range, indoor wireless connections and WiMAX is for long range outdoor connections.
